Since the world becomes more informationalized, communication has become more and more frequent between different countries. However, different languages result in creating communication obstacles which significantly increase the need for interpreters. As one of the most important interpreting forms, consecutive interpreting has been applied widely in many occasions, such as conferences, business negotiations and speeches. Consecutive interpreting requires an interpreter to have the ability of bilingual transformation, storing and recalling short-term memory, and the ability to react quickly for any unexpected situation during interpreting processes. The interpreter has to listen to three to five minutes long speech and then interpret it in target language within a very short time period. Therefore, to master the skills of long sentence interpreting is very crucial for an interpreter.This report chooses the Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong's 2015 National Day Rally speech as the source text, and the content of the speech is about the general information of Singapore's development over the past 50 years and development direction and attitude towards Asia and the world. This report is going to explore significance of long sentences interpreting in consecutive interpreting based on the Interpretive Theory, and how to apply these skills into a real interpreting practice. Having knowledge of differences between Chinese and English is necessary for an interpreter. An interpreter also needs ability to handle pressure while working within limited time. Using long sentence interpreting skills help an interpreter to achieve better performance in interpreting activities. In the report, the author introduces background of the task, the features of the task and the necessity of discussing the long sentences interpreting firstly. In the following report, the author illustrates procedures of the whole interpreting practice which includes the pre-interpretation preparations, interpretation process and post-interpretation quality control. Then, next part of the report focuses on case analysis, which introduces definition and important achievements of the Interpretive Theory. In addition, this part also describes interpreting skills and methods which could be applied in the interpreting practice. Finally, the author concludes the whole interpreting practice, points out other problems and provides solutions to all the problems in the interpreting practice.This report intends to demonstrate that long sentence interpreting skills can help an interpreter to handle some difficulties during interpreting activities. It would allow an interpreter to grasp the main idea of speakers more effectively by applying long sentence interpreting skills, which leave more time for an interpreter to think about expressions. Applying Long sentence interpreting skill is likely to ease mental burden of an interpreter, and is expected to improve the quality of interpreting.
