With the increasing development of globalization, translation is playing an important role in the international communication. There are lots of forms and variants of translation and among them, the translation of the subtitle of documentary films enjoy a special and significant position. So far, there have been a number of translation works about this. However, because of the different contents and stylistic features, it's still impossible to form a comparably systematic and complete system on the translation of the subtitle of documentary film. This translation report is based on the author's translation of the first two chapters The Sky, The earth, and Civilization Appearing of the documentary The Great Loess Tableland. During the translation, the author found that the content of this documentary is mainly about the evolution and development of the Loess Plateau. In addition, the specific history and customs are also involved. In order to express the meaning of the original text accurately and satisfy the requirements of the target readers, the author used the related translation principles of skopos theory in the translation. This translation report can be divided into five parts. The first part is the brief description of the translation task, including the origin and content of the translation text. The second part is the summary of the translation practice, including the pre-translation preparation, the problems in the translation process, proofreading and finalization. The third part will introduce the Germany functionalist skopos theory. The fourth part is the analysis of the specific translation cases. Combining with the translation principles of skopos theory, the author will make a detailed analysis and study of the translation text, including the difficulties in the translation process and its solution to each problem. The last part summarizes the enlightenment and lessons that author has learned from this translation practice and the problems which still need to be discussed and resolved. The author hopes that the study of this translation practice on the excerpts of The Great Loess Tableland, under the guidance of skopos theory, can bring some enlightenment and experience to the following translators.
