A Study On The E-C Translation Of The Chinese In America From The Perspective Of Functional Equivalence

The translation material selected in this thesis is the ninth chapter--The Chinese Exclusion Act of The Chinese in America written by Iris Chang.This chapter mainly focuses on the evolution of American policies towards the Chinese in America.The translation of the chapter can help people to have a better understanding of the history of this period and the current Sino-US relations.This thesis analyzes the translation from the perspective of functional equivalence theory.As the core of Nida's translation theory,functional equivalence theory was first proposed in the 1960s.Instead of emphasizing the rigid correspondence between the source language and the target language,it pursues functional equivalence and attaches importance to readers'responses.The theory of functional equivalence has had a great influence on translation studies both at home and abroad.In view of the special documentary style of The Chinese in America,we need to pay special attention to the informative,emotive and other functions of the source language.In order to reproduce the original function,the translator must proceed from different perspectives,and the four levels(vocabulary,syntax,text,style)of correspondence stressed by Nida's functional equivalence theory are just in line with the translation requirements of this subject matter.This thesis focuses on the application and guiding function of functional equivalence theory on the translation of the Chinese Exclusion Act.The author hopes that this thesis can provide some guidance and reference significance for other similar researches.Through the study of functional equivalence and its concrete guiding role in the E-C translation of The Chinese Exclusion Act,the translator realizes that due to the cultural differences of Chinese and English,the complete equivalence of style and form can hardly be reached.So the translator's attention should be shifted to the mastering of the essence of the original text,and the respect for the culture and way of expression of the target language,in a bid to reproduce the functions of the source text and make it more readable.
