A Report On C-E Translation Of China Commerce Yearbook 2014 (Excerpts)

As China continues to thrive,the international community shows keen interest in China and China is eager to go global.China Commerce Yearbook aims to provide complete and reliable historical information about China’s commerce to all the people who want to get informed of or make researches on China’s commerce in different circles at home and abroad.Therefore,its translation plays an important role in propelling information exchange,learning China’s commerce development and making relevant policy.Given that,ten reports with a total of over 17,000 Chinese characters in China Commerce Yearbook 2014 are selected as the source text of this translation practice.They are respectively from columns of Special Articles,Local Commerce and the Economic and Trade Relations with Countries and Regions.China Commerce Yearbook 2014 emphasizes logic and aims to transmit referential content in a formal and accurate manner.According to Reiss’s division of text types,it belongs to informative text that pays attention to target readers’ effective reception of original information.Skopos theory,holding that translation is a cross-cultural interaction with explicit purpose,is the same as yearbook translation in target language orientation.Therefore,it is chosen to guide this translation practice.In light of skopos theory,this report carries out detailed studies on C-E translation of China Commerce Yearbook 2014 from lexical and syntactic levels and discusses corresponding translation methods.As for vocabulary translation,variation and conversion are adopted for high-frequency words;addition,conversion and explanation for commercial terms;annotation,combination,addition,omission and explanation respectively for words with Chinese characteristics.When it comes to sentence translation,two ways come into use for non-subject sentences:substitution and addition.Division and combination are flexibly used to deal with parallel,long and complicated sentences.The whole translation process is guided by skopos rule,with fidelity rule as its starting point and coherence rule as foothold.Meanwhile,the translator exerts herself to keep the balance of skopos,coherence and fidelity rules in a comprehensive and dynamic way.In the final part,inadequacies and relevant advice are put forward,which are hoped to be referential for future yearbook translation.
