This is a project report on the translation extracted from The Interpretation of Dreams written by Sigmund Freud,published by Wordsworth Editions Limited in 1997.The main translation is from the last part of The Inf erpretation of Dreams,'The Psychology of the Dream-Processes'.The chapter analyzes and explores the phenomena of dreams through cases,the source of dreams as well as the process of dreams,namely the psychological mechanism.The last chapter is also a summary of this book.This section is committed to focus on the analysis of people's sub consciousness and the impact of human desire on the generation of dreams.With nowadays pressure increasing with time going by,various mental illnesses continue to increase,which frequently influence people's daily life.A psychoanalysis method initiated by the author Sigmund Freud of The Interpretation of Dreams,is of great advantage to this problem.This book tells not only about Sigmund Freud's"dream analysis" theory,but also is conductive to doctors to understand patients through dreams,so they can diagnose illness from patients.Therefore,the translation of Freud's The Interpretation of Dreams enjoys a distinctly realistic meaning in a certain way.The translation of the seventh chapter of The Interpretation of Dreams faces some challenges.First,the book owns relatively long sentences and rich language meanings.Second,there some words whose meanings in the dictionary can not be described the meanings in the original text.Third,English differs from Chinese in cultural backgrounds and expressions,so they belong to two different languages.The expressions of the habit of languages should also be taken into account,for the purpose of faithfulness to the original language.Based on the reasons above,the functional equivalence theory of Eugene Nida is employed.Hopefully,under the guidance of this theory,the translation not only can convey the original information,but also can reproduce the original charm.With the translation practice report finished,the author is more able to digest the translation of long sentences,the translator must first understand the original English syntactic structure,to find the central content of sentences and understand the meaning of each layer,and then analyze the meaning between the layers in terms of their logical relationship.The last step is to translate the correct sentences in accordance with the characteristics of Chinese and expression,without rigidly adhering to the original form.
