This is a project report on the translation of 'Dream Work' extracted from the Interpretation of Dreams written by Sigmund Freud,a Jewish psychoanalyst.The part selected is the 'Absurd Dreams-Intellectual Performances in Dreams of Dream Work that tells about the psycho-analyses done by Freud which are based on the theory of unconsciousness and sexual desire.He lays focus on the claim that the interpretation of dreams should make use of the mechanism of dream-work and elicit latent dream by manifest dream to find the suppressed unconscious desire of dreamers through the interpretation of symbolism,affects and absurdness in dreams.The high pressure in social life leads to the appearance of some psychoses,such as depressive disorder,infantile autism.However,the translator discovers that The Interpretation of Dreams is of great use in medical science,especially for the treatment of the psychiatric patients.Its translation thus enjoys the realistic meaning.Some scholars and doctors may have a better knowledge of the causes of neurosis through further study of this book and then they may find the solution to such diseases.The significance of translation is to convey not only the information of the original texts,but their style and beauties.In the original texts,the wordings are obscure and filled with terminologies.There are a lot of complicated santences which are particular and eloquent.Considering this,the translator has applied the theory of functional equivalence proposed by Nida for the translation of some long sentences and terminologies to reproduce the information and style of the original texts in a closest and most natural way.Guided by the theory of functional equivalence,the translator has applied many strategies and methods such as,insertion,annotation and splitting to settle a series of difficulties and thus obtained the following enlightenment:Translators must fully grasp the background information related to the original text and the writer so as to help avoid misunderstanding before translation is conducted.Translators should not only make use of different tools but also the professional opinions to convey the original style of the text before translation.In the meantime,calmness and patience are also indispensable in the face of difficulties in translation.After the first translation is completed,translators need self-proofreading and peer-proofreading to secure the high quality of translation.
