The Interpreting Principles And Tactics Of Classical Chinese Quotations On Diplomatic Occasions

With the development of China’s economy and the improvement of the comprehensive national strength,the cultural exchanges between China and the west are becoming increasingly frequent.As an important part of Chinese culture,classical Chinese quotations frequently appear in our leaders’ speeches with the unique cultural charm.The interpretation of classical Chinese quotations on diplomatic occasions also attracts worldwide attention.At present,there are extensive and in-depth researches on classical Chinese quotations by many experts and scholars from different perspectives.However,most of the researches are on translation but the interpreting researches are insufficient.Therefore,it is of great significance to study the interpreting of classical Chinese quotations on diplomatic occasions.For diplomatic interpreters,how to understand and interpret classical Chinese quotations effectively on diplomatic occasions is a major issue.Under the guidance of Political Equivalence theory,this paper studies the interpreting principles and tactics of classical Chinese quotations on diplomatic occasions by analyzing interpreting cases.This paper is divided into four parts.The first part introduces the research background,purpose and significance of this study.The second part analyzes the research status of classical Chinese quotations interpreting and reviews the researches of diplomatic interpreting under the guidance of Political Equivalence theory and researches of classical Chinese quotations interpreting on diplomatic occasions.The third part analyzes the characteristics of diplomatic interpreting and the features of classical Chinese quotations and summarizes the functions of classical Chinese quotations on diplomatic occasions.The fourth part puts forward that the interpreting of classical Chinese quotations on diplomatic occasions should be guided by Political Equivalence principle,promptness principle and the Three Beauties principle according to the characteristics of diplomatic interpreting and the features of classical Chinese quotations.Based on analyses of interpreting cases on diplomatic occasions,the author holds that the interpreting tactics such as domestication and foreignization are effective tactics for diplomatic interpreting.Interpreters should select different tactics according to different diplomatic contexts.
