Strategies For C-E Consecutive Interpreting Of Metaphors On Diplomatic Occasions

High-quality diplomatic interpretation from Chinese to English has become much more needed as China grows in its international status.Nowadays,even on serious and formal diplomatic occasions,figurative expressions,such as metaphors,are not rare to see.As a trainee interpreter,the author has found that figurative speech can be a great hindrance for interpreting from Chinese to English,and among them,metaphors are particularly difficult to handle.This thesis aims at analyzing,through discourse analysis,the obstacles caused by metaphors in interpreting and ways to overcome these obstacles.Two Press Conferences of the Two Sessions in 2018,where Premier Li Keqiang and Foreign Minister Wang Yi respectively met with the press,are chosen as materials for the analysis.The thesis is divided into four parts: Chapter one brings up the research question of metaphor interpreting.Chapter two is literature review,covering characteristics and principles of diplomatic interpretation,as well as the definition,characteristics,and classifications of metaphors,a review of metaphor translation and strategies.Chapter three analyzes the interpretation produced by professional interpreters at two chosen press conferences.Metaphors are categorized and coping strategies are offered accordingly.Chapter four is the concluding part,where findings and limitations of this research are listed.In view of the figure of speech,the strategies can be recognized as keeping,converting and deleting the original tenor and vehicle.Whereas when judged by the content,the strategies can be grouped into more detailed categories,including literal interpretation,image-replaced interpretation,free interpretation,liberal-and-free interpretation,and abridged interpretation.This paper also offers advice on which strategy is preferred when interpreting a certain type of metaphor.Political equivalence theory is adopted as the basic principle for the analysis.The author hopes that this study could provide some useful suggestions to trainee interpreters,and encourage further study in this area.
