Translation Of Long Sentences In English Financial News Under The Guidance Of Functional Equivalence Theory

Finance,as a very important field,is not only closely related to our daily life,but also crucial to the stability and development of the whole national economy.Owing to the important roles of finance in the national economy,financial news reports have been attached great importance to and occupy an importance position in all kinds of news reports.As a tool for financial exchanges,the translation of financial news has penetrated into every aspect of financial and economic activities.To produce good translations of financial news,translators should not only have an intimate knowledge of finance,but also know very well the lexical,syntactic and textual features of financial news reports.With these features in view,translators will be able to translate financial news reports faithfully and expressively into the target language by referring to financial knowledge and translation theories.In the translation of English financial news,whether the message of financial news can be accurately and effectively conveyed to the target readers or not largely depends on the translation quality of long sentences in English financial news,which is,so to speak,both the key point and the difficulty in English financial news translation.Guided by Nida's equivalence theory,this thesis discusses the translation of long sentences in English financial news by analyzing examples taken from the author'stranslation practice materials.In addition to an introduction and a conclusion,the thesis consists of three chapters.Chapter One gives a brief introduction to Nida's functional equivalence theory,including the concepts of formal equivalence,functional equivalence and readers' response.Then it discusses the guiding significance of functional equivalence theory in the translation of long sentences in English financial news.Chapter Two elaborates on the basic features of long sentence in English financial news.Good grasp of the basic features of long sentence in English financial news will enable translators to gain a better understanding of the sentences and transfer them into idiomatic target language with appropriate translation methods.Chapter Three analyzes methods to achieve functional equivalence in the translation of long sentences in English financial news with examples taken from the author's translations and with the features of English long sentences in view.The thesis holds that by using the translation methods of sequencing,inversion,division and reorganization,translators can convey the message of the long sentences in English financial news accurately and effectively to the target readers,so that the target readers can have almost the same response to the target text as the original readers do to the original text,thus realizing the purpose of smooth financial exchanges through the translation of financial news.
