A Report On Translation Practicum At China Daily News

News translation,as an important means to promote communication,helps news spread to other regions,nations and cultures.This paper describes the author's translation practice when participating in a news translation program led by China Daily on the iNews online platform.The paper includes case studies of translation problems and the author's self-reflection.Firstly,this paper briefly introduces this program,and describes the author's pre-translation analysis and preparation.Then,it provides detailed case analyses on translation issues regarding comprehension,expression,adaptation,and feedback.Comprehension concerns domain knowledge,language knowledge,and global thinking.Expression concerns differences in style and language structure between English and Chinese,and the use of plain Chinese.Adaptation concerns word order,and flexibility in translation.Feedback concerns the proofreader's revision on overlooked translation mistakes.This paper goes on to summarize the professional quality that translators should have in practice.Those engaged in news translation should improve efficiency,and pay attention to accumulation of knowledge.Translators should be responsible for their works and be careful enough to avoid common sense mistakes.Translators need to justify their decisions,and learn to use corpus.In addition,as members of a translation team,translators need to cooperate with each other.Lastly,the author summarizes the problems and shortcomings encountered during the practice:difficulties in understanding the cultural differences between the source language and the target language,and lack of cross-cultural communication awareness;too much attention to translation itself while neglecting readers' experience and the communication effect;and inadequate computer skills.The author hopes this paper can provide insights for those who want to,or is already engaged in news translation,and help them improve the quality of translation.
