This is a translation report mainly illustrating the strategies adopted in translating passive sentences in Part 16 of New Zealand Companies Act(1993).The Act(1993)regulates important issues like establishment, activities and dissolution of companies in New Zealand.Although the Act(1993)is an important part of western companies acts,it is rarely studied by Chinese scholars. The translator expects the Chinese translation of this act can help Chinese people have an easy access to the content of New Zealand Companies Act(1993).In translating legislative texts, the translator discovers that a high frequency of passive sentences exists in English legislative texts and the frequency is much higher than that in the corresponding Chinese ones. Moreover, when converted into Chinese, the translated passive sentences present various forms. Therefore, the translator attempts to employ translation strategies introduced by previous scholars to guide her own translation. The first part of the report introduces the translation project, the translation process, the linguistic features of the source text and its translation criteria. The second part of the report summarizes the categorization of English and Chinese passive voice and the general E-C translation techniques of passive sentences.Based on these two parts, the report illustrates how the translator analyzes and solves the translation problems of passive sentences in the guidance of translation strategies. The last part of the report summarizes the translation experience of this project and locates problems that need to be further studied.
