A Report On Translation Of The Oxford History Of Literary Translation In English:Volume 4(Chapter 9.1-10.1)

The source text of this report is selected from the chapter 9.1 to 10.1 of the fourth volume of The Oxford History of Literary Translation in English.which introduces the history,scope,and significance of literary translation in English from 1790 to 1990.The author mainly translated the chapter 9.1 to 10.1 in the fourth volume of The Oxford History of Literary Translation in English,including hymns,oratorio,oral literature,as well as the religious text translation.In view of the language features of the source text,the author chose Eugene A.Nida's Functional Equivalence as the guiding theory of this translation report.This translation report mainly consists of five chapters: the first chapter is the introduction,which briefly presents the text background and significance of the translation project;the second chapter is preparation,including lexical,syntactic,and textual features of the source text;consulting and reference of parallel texts and related literature;group teamwork and cooperation;the third chapter introduces Nida's Functional Equivalence Theory;as the major part of the report,the fourth chapter combines Nida's Functional Equivalence with the translation process together to make a case study based on the translation methods from vocabulary,sentences and texts level respectively;in the fifth chapter,the author sums up the translation process,then points out the experiences in the translation practice and insufficient aspects.Under the guidance of Nida's Functional Equivalence Theory,this report aims at realizing the closest equivalence at lexical,syntactic and textual level between the original text and the target text.The author not only weighs language factors,but also cultural factors to make the translation take advantages of target language.First of all,the author hopes that this translation report can promote Chinese readers' understanding of English literary translation;then,due to the lack of this kind of translation theme in China,it is also hoped to make some contributions to the academic scholars,literary translation amateurs,and related scientific research in this field.
