Project Report On The Consecutive Interpreting For International Project Cooperation Conference Between Guangxi University And Arizona State University

The current era is dominated by economic globalization and regional integration.Therefore,exchanges and cooperations between disciplines of different universities outweigh many other issues of their agendas.Guangxi University also highly values exchanges and cooperations with top universities over the globe,hoping to improve its own teaching and scientific research quality.This paper is based on the personal experience of the author of providing interpreting services on the occasion of the bilateral negotiation over the educational cooperative program between the School of Public Administration of GXU and the College of Public Service&Community Solutions.With the background of the exchange and communication between Chinese and foreign universities,the paper demonstrates the pre-interpreting preparation,interpreting performance(case study)and post-interpreting evolution in a relatively comprehensive manner.Hereinafter,the author discusses that the pre-interpreting preparation shall include thematic knowledge buildup,technical terminology accumulation and psychological adjustment with the intention to lay a solid foundation for the fruitful outcomes of the task.Via case study,the author shows his coping strategies utilized to deal with the difficulties facing him on the site,especially the cases where he had failed to be prepared for some certain terminologies and proper nouns,but he found a way out after all.By unitizing Daniel Gile’s Interpretation Comprehensive Equation and Effort Model,the author successfully addressed the challenges concerning knowledge of the language and extra-linguistic knowledge.He then reflects on the communicative role of an interpreter in the whole negotiation process,including as a stuff member,the communicative bridge and the mediator of conversations.Finally,the author concludes the gains and losses of this interpreting practice.Taking advantage of the experience of the very occasion where bilingual audience is presented,he concludes the linguistic and mental preparation for such occasions,hoping it can provoking some thoughts for the industry insiders.
