With the increasing exchange and communication between countries, translation,as an important means of cultural exchange and transmission, has served a more significant role.Novels are an important genre in literary works.Novels play a pivotal role in promoting communicating in world culture. Therefore, novel translation has attracted much attention from home and abroad. The source text, with about 10000 words,is taken from Sketches of Young Gentlemen by Charles John Huffam Dickens,a very famous English writer in the 19th century. The majority of his works are novels. His works mainly reflect real life phenomenon. He uses excellent artistic techniques in his works to depict overall social picture, and he is good at implementing humanitarian spirit to praise virtue and punish the wicked. He has created a lot of unforgettable images. His works are mainly novels, including The Pickwick Papers,Oliver Twist,The Old Curiosity Shop,Hard Times,Our Mutual Friend, and so on.But Sketches of Young Gentlemen still doesn’t have any Chinese version,so this thesis attempts to translate this work. This translation report applies the principle of functional equivalence theory to guide the Chinese translation of the excerpts of Sketches of Young Gentlemen, and uses the closest natural equivalent to the source language message so as to make the readers have the same response to the translated text the same way as readers to the original text. The translation report is divided into five parts.Chapter One is the task description.Chapter Two is the theoretical basis.Chapter Three is the translation process.Chapter Four is the case analysis. The translation methods of words include concretizing of abstract words, addition, omission and class shift, and the translation approaches of sentences are translating in the reverse order, division, and change of voice.Chapter Five is the conclusion of the report, and the author makes some reflections on the translation practice.
