Conference Interpreting Methods-Report Of Interpreting Practice In Forum On Global Production Capacity And Business Cooperation

With the advent of globalization,communication between people speaking different languages has become more and more prevalent.Therefore,as a bridge among different cultures,interpretation has played an important part in international affairs.Among the various kinds of interpretation,conference interpreting is undoubtedly one of the most prominent forms.Conference interpreting is usually used on high level international meetings held by international organizations such as the United Nations,European Union,government and relevant departments of a country as well as social groups and non-governmental organizations.Many hot issues as well as regional problems and academic topics are discussed on these kinds of meetings and many significant and influential decisions are made on them.As a postgraduate majoring in English interpreting,I have participated in several interpreting activities,and this thesis is based on one of them in a big forum--Forum on Global Production Capacity and Business Cooperation,intending to find out some conference interpreting methods and techniques.This thesis is made up of five chapters.Chapter one gives an overall introduction of this thesis which includes the background information of my interpreting practice and significance of the thesis.Chapter two is about the development,characteristics,general process of conference interpretation and conference interpreter's qualities.Chapter three centers around the description of my interpreting practice which describe my interpreting activities before the task,during the task and after the task respectively.This chapter also provides many suggestions on how to finish an interpreting task perfectly with supportive examples,including what preparations interpreters should make before the task,how to take notes effectively,how to deal with different kinds of difficulties during the task and so on.Chapter four is the discussion of the common methods applied in conference interpreting,namely,amplification,omission,simplification,restructuring and shift.Chapter five is a brief conclusion of this thesis which lists the major findings and limitations of the study.
