This paper is a report on English-Chinese translation practice.The second chapter in this inspirational book Ego Is the Enemy is chosen as the source text of this report.This book mainly tells stories about some celebrities,whose success and failure are both closely related to “ego”.The author of this book,Ryan Holiday is the youngest Internet marketing writer in America.By means of telling stories,he teaches people how to treat “ego” in an appropriate way and illustrates the importance of “ego”to success.Before case study,this report provides a brief introduction to translation project and translation process.In the process of translation,the theory of text typology is mainly used as the theory guidance.In general,the choice of translation strategies is mostly based on the text type.Besides,some other factors are also considered,so flexible translation strategies are adopted while translating.The theory of text typology can be understood in this way,that is,the language function of the text determines the text type which then determines the translation strategies.The three text types covered in this report are respectively informative text,expressive text and operative text.The specific use of translation standards,strategies and techniques depends on the characteristics and translation purpose of different texts.By analyzing the language features and functions of the original text,the text types are determined.And then the translation strategies are accordingly adopted,depending on the specific circumstances.Such strategies include conversion between parts of speech,the choice of word meaning,addition,omission,adjustment of word,etc.Through this translation practice,the translator has studied the theory of text typology put forward by Katharina Reiss.In addition,the translator can also skillfully apply different translation strategies and techniques to different types of text.It will be helpful to future translation practice of inspirational books.
