A Chinese-English Translation Report On Mysterious Mojiang,Where The Sun Turns Back (Excerpts)

The project in this translation report is based on The Series of Classic Yunnan published by Yunnan Education Press.The translator chose Chapter Six,Chapter Seven and Chapter Nine from Mysterious Mojiang,Where the Sun Turns Back to do the translation practice.The main content of the three chapters in the book is to introduce basic information of Mojiang and the Hani culture.Chapter Six tells the hard migration history of the Hani people during the long-time span.How did they change from northern nomadic people to a group who cultivates rice in the south of China? Chapter Seven tells the romantic love in the Roof Attic,including “climbing into the Roof Attic”,“dating girls”,“grasping a bonnet”.Chapter Nine shows an attractive sight that thousands of swallows flap up in Mojiang.Why do swallows have a special liking to Mojiang? By looking at the historical scroll of the Hani ethnic group,can we find the answers to those questions of Mojiang? How do the Hani people inherit their traditional concepts in a new way? As part of the Chinese culture,the culture of Hani ethnic group should also go globally and get more people realize Mojiang,knowing about the unique and rich culture of the Hani ethnic group with the help of this translation project.This translation report is composed of four sections,mainly discussing difficulties and methods in translation process and analyzing how to combine theories with practice.The first section is the description of the translation project,including the background,significance and objectives of the translation project and the theme and style of the source text.The second section describes the translation process,including the translator's preparations,translation theory and translation strategies,which provides a theoretical framework for this translation project.The third section explains how to apply the Skopos rule,the fidelity rule and the coherence rule with examples and how to adopt appropriate translation strategies.The last section sums up the enlightenments and lessons gained from the translation practice and problems that need to be solved during the translation process.In order to realize the purposes of translation,this translation project takes the Skopos theory of the German functional school as its theoretical base.The Skopos theory holds that the purpose of translation decides translation strategies.The purpose of a specific translation project decides on literal translation,meaning translation,combinations or no translation.Translation purposes decide on strategies.Therefore,in the process of translation the Skopos theory provides a theoretic base for translators to take appropriate strategies to deal with the target text flexibly.With the guidance of this theory,this report combines cultures of ethnic minorities,the Skopos theory and translation of international publicity,not only aiming at international publicity studies of the Hani culture but also taking the Hani culture as a case study.The purpose of doing so is to better publicize,transmit and exchange the Hani culture.Therefore,this report carries much research value and social significance,and it can also provide a reference to future translators in terms of this kind of texts.
