This practice report is based on my translation for the first three units of the English book Cities and Suburbs which belongs to the Bowmar / Noble Social Studies Series. This book designed for practical teaching of basic social studies is about the history and development of cities and suburbs.Encouraged by my tutor,I accepted the translation task. And it took me two months to complete the whole task. The report consists of the following five chapters: Task Description,Process Description,Preparations for Translation,Case Analysis and Summary. The first chapter,Task Description, gives a brief introduction to the source, content, requirement and accomplishment of the translation task. The second chapter,Process Description, mainly introduces the whole translation process including Task Accepting,Preparations,Translating and Revision. The third chapter,Preparations for Translation, elaborately describes the preparations for the translation. The fourth chapter,Case Analysis,is the most important part.Since I follow Skopos theory in translation process, the three rules of Skopos theory including skopos rule, coherence rule and fidelity rule are employed to the case analysis for demonstrating how various translation strategies are used to make the translation meet the criterion of “adequacy” of translation. The fifth chapter,Summary, makes a summary of the experience and lessons I have learned from this translation practice.Although the original text is easy and the knowledge concerned is simple,I have met many difficulties in translation process.I believe, therefore, that translation is an art.To be a good translator,I still need to learn more knowledge about language, translation, social sciences and culture.
