Language Features And Translation Skills Of Electronic Product User Manual

This is a translation report based on the author's translation practice in Nanjing Huawei Technologies Co.,Ltd.During the internship,the author was commissioned by the company to translate the user manual of the Huawei P9 Plus,which belongs to the technical text.Product user manuals describe the performance,usage,and maintenance of goods as well as precautions.The translator is required to follow the principles of conciseness,accuracy and user-friendliness.This report is based on the translation of Huawei P9 Plus user manual,which reports the translation methods from lexical,syntactical and discourse perspectives.This report consists of five parts.The first part is the task description,introducing project background,project significance,and translation process.The second part is pre-translation preparations which include text analysis,parallel texts and tools.The third part deals with some difficulties which occur in the translation practice;what's more,a series of feasible translation methods are analyzed from the aspects of words,sentences and paragraphs.The fourth part is the post-translation reviews from the author and the client.The last part is a conclusion,summing up the lessons the author learned in the whole translation process.Besides,author's recommendations for translation in this area as well as limitations are also listed in this part.In this report,the translation of terms,sentences,and discourses are addressed based on the features of the original text.To be specific,technical terms can be dealt with by referring to relevant technical books,dictionaries and online resources or the existing standardized translated versions;in addition,translating four-character phrase is another challenge.At the sentence level,imperative sentences and notional passive voice are common in the source text.Literal translation and reordering can be adopted to translate imperative sentences and notional passive voice can be converted into syntactic passive voice;At the discourse level,logical and coherent sentences and paragraphs can be handled on the whole by paying attention to the context as well as the text structure.In order to take full advantage of user manuals.the translator needs to present the content accurately and concisely,which requires application of some specific translation methods.It is hoped that this report can be of some value in the future practice of user manuals and related technology texts.
