A Report On English Translation Of Chinese Subtitles From The Perspective Of Narratology

With the development and popularization of the Internet and video player terminals,online videos are gradually transformed from unorganized videos created by grassroots to more professional videos with high profit,standardized management and platforms for uploading and operating.As a new art form in this new media era,online videos occupy a very important position in online media and major video sites.However,the research of online video subtitle translation does not keep up in time.Whether from the number of researchers or published papers,the domestic subtitle researches on online videos are very scarce.The recent research results are mostly about the principles,strategies and skills of subtitle translation from the perspective of functional equivalence theory,manipulation theory and eco-translatology.Therefore,this thesis tries to explore the online videos'subtitle translation on the theoretical basis of narratology,to testify its feasibility and to achieve framing narratives.The narrative theory involved in this article includes two parts:the classic narrative and the translation narrative.The classic narrative focuses on the research of narrative discourse initiated by Genette,including narrative time,narrative perspective,character discourse and so on.Based on Mona Baker's "translation as renarration",this thesis closely combines the narrative theory with translation studies,and puts forward the idea that translators can use four framing strategies to strengthen,weaken or modify the narrative of source texts.From the perspective of narrative time,narrative perspective and character discourse,with the help of Mona Baker's framing strategies of "temporal and spatial framing","selective appropriation of textual material","framing by labelling" and "framing by repositioning of participants",this thesis tries to translate Ergeng Company's video subtitle translation project by framing the narrative order information,mainly to add essential interposed narrative information,to add or delete supplement narrative information reasonably and to highlight suspense information of flashback;by framing the narrative perspective information,mainly to show the implied focalization,to transfer the multiple perspectives' conversion of "internal focalization",and to enhance information of "external focalization";by framing the character discourse,mainly to convert "direct speech" and"indirect speech",and to convert "free direct speech" and "indirect speech".
