White Gloves is a Japanese-translated psychology work written by John Kotre,an American psychologist famous in the 1990s,and translated by Reiko Ishiyama,a Japanese translator.Through his own experience and a large number of actual cases, the author explains what memory is and what autobiographical memory is to readers. In the book, the author tries to prove that memory is mutable and is like a river, changing by every moment. This book brought a great impact on the psychology by refuting the viewpoint held by many neuroscientists that memory can be preserved intact and reproduced without any changes like the data in computers. As we all know, memory is the activity of memorizing, maintaining, reappearing and recognizing the past experiences by human beings' brain. It is the foundation for advanced mental activities such as thinking and imagination.Memory research falls not only into the category of psychology, but also into the category of brain science.Although significant progress has been made in the study of memory, there are still many unsolved mysteries about memory. Thus the researches on memory will be continued. There are three reasons that I choose White Gloves as a translation text.First, although the book is a Japanese-translated version,it introduces the most advanced scientific knowledge about memory from the West.Besides, there is noChinese-translated version in China.I hope that our Chinese people can get to understand this book after my translating.Furthermore,I want to work as a translator in the field of psychology in the future,so I hope I can learn some psychological knowledge and get the experience of translating psychological works through this translating practice. As mentioned above, memory research belongs to the category of psychology.Psychology,as a science and technology, was born in the western world a hundred years ago. After one hundred years of development and improvement, the theory and methods of psychology in the western world have been well-developed,which have a deep influence on politics, economy, culture, art, religion, business management, marketing, etc.Although there has been various ways of self-cultivation since ancient times in China, the traditional way of self-cultivation can no longer meet the psychological needs of modern people as people are bearing a variety of psychological distresses nowadays. That is because all kinds of thoughts and knowledge concepts are being updated at a faster speed while the level of economic life has been continuously improving with the deepening of reforms and opening up.So,the theoretical research of psychology and the application of popular psychology are very urgent and necessary. Therefore,it is necessary for us to learn and introduce advanced Western psychological knowledge in a timely manner through various channels. This book is divided into eight chapters to elaborate on the author's point of view on memory. The volume of the whole book is too much to be translated in a short period of time.So I choose two chapters and the preface and commentary to start with and translate to more than 20,000 words. The text I choose to translate introduces the author's motivation to write the book, the existing forms of memory, the sublimated memory and other psychologists' comments on the book.It involves psychology and brain science knowledge which falls into the category of social sciences translation. The main objective of the translation practice is to accurately transmit information and convey the author's point of view precisely to Chinese readers.Because there are a lot of cases listed in the text,it's important for the translator to maintain readability and avoid blindly pursuing the accuracy which makes the translation unreadable. Therefore,in the process of translation,I take different approaches to translate different types of texts guided by the theories of Nida's equivalence functions and Newmark's textual functions after analyzing the features of the text.Through the description of the task and the analysis of the cases,I come to conclusions as follows.First, when it comes to translating psychological works, apart from general translation skills, translators have to know how to translate according to the characteristics of psychology works. It requires translators to have a certain amount of background knowledge and language knowledge to understand terms and choose the accurate words.Besides, translation is related closely to each culture and society.Translators have to combine the three elements, which are language, culture and society,so that the translation can be assured to delivery new knowledge to people correctly and reliably.
