The thesis aims to explore proper strategies on long sentences translating from the perspective of Functional Equivalence Theory by case-studying the translation of "Can Confucianism Survive in an Age of Universalism and Globalization?" The introduction of English literature of social science plays a vital role in the development of humanity studies in China,however,large amounts of long sentences stand in the way.Eugene A.Nida's Functional Equivalence Theory might be a guiding principle in this area.It requires translators to convey equivalent information in the most proper and natural way,and also advocates translators to use appropriate strategies to transfer two different structures,aiming to create most similar responses between readers of original texts and of translated texts.Under the guidance of the theory,the author analyzes differences of sentence structure between English and Chinese and adopts six specific strategies named embedding,cutting,reversing,splitting,inserting and recasting.After practical verification,it is concluded that the strategies can transfer different structures of two languages by sequence-changing,adding and deleting,and recombining.In this way,high-quality function-equivalent translation can be achieved.
