This report aims to explore the translation skills of academic discourses under the guidance of Text Typology. The translated text is excerpted from Nature,Society, and Justice in the Anthropocene, which explains the relationships among energy, money and economic growth from multiple perspectives. There are lots of terminologies and long sentences in the text, featuring well-knit structure, strong logic,as well as abstraction, causing great difficulties to the translation practice. In order to present an accurate, fluent and logical translation, this translation practice resorts to Newmark’s text typology to identify the source text as an informational text. Therefore, the communicative translation method should be mainly adopted. On this basis, some translation examples are analyzed in this report from four levels proposed by Newmark, namely the textual level, the referential level, the cohesive level,as well as the level of naturalness,to explore the translation skills of academic discourse. The report finds that three translation methods, namely, amplification, extension, division, can provide useful guidance for the translation practice.Among them, amplification is mainly used in the referential level and the cohesive level. At the referential level,it can be used to clarify the semantics. For example, the translator can clarify the references of hanging participles, pronouns, etc. At the cohesive level, translators can adopt it to express the implicit logic of the original text. The extension method is mainly used at the textual level. For instance, one can make the translation conform to the expressive habits of the target language by transforming voices. The method of division here refers to the adjustment of word order, which is mainly adopted at the referential level and the level of naturalness. While translating long sentences, the translator, after grasping the logic of the original text, often needs to reorganize the translation in the cohesive way of the target language, which inevitably requires word order adjustment. This report explores the guiding role of Newmark’s translation thoughts in the translation of academic discourse, which to some extent broadens the translation approaches of academic discourse and enriches the application of Newmark’s text typology.Meanwhile,it can serve as a reference for translators to improve their translation by resorting to text typology.
