With the relationship between China and Mauritius increasingly close, more and more people started to learn Chinese in Mauritius. Since the Mauritius Ministry of Education included Modern Chinese into Oriental languages in primary school, Modern Chinese has become the elective language which most students chose to learn. However, due to the different languages background, the study of Chinese characters lagged behind other elements of language learning in Chinese language learning process, which is affecting the overall quality of learning Chinese. This paper takes the Chinese learners in Mauritius Notre Dame Bon Secours RCA School as investigate objects. Through investigating and analyzing their Character Errors, we can identify the reasons for the formation of these errors and provide effective teaching tactics of Chinese characters.The first part of the paper introduces the reason why the writer chose this theme, tells the method of research and theoretical basis, we also discuss the current status and the inadequacies of domestic research.The second part of the paper collects and analyzes the characters errors of the Chinese learners in Notre Dame Bon Secours R.C.A School from the horizontal and vertical statistics. This section is divided into three sections. The first section discusses the objects and the source of corpus; the second section collects the Chinese character errors from first grade to sixth grade, and analyzes the characteristics of the errors in different grade. The third section classifies the collected errors, calculates the numbers of each type of errors and the percentage of it in all errors that the learners make, finds out which type of errors is the high-frequency occurrence, and then analyses the reasons.The third part of the papers discusses the causes of Chinese characters errors. They are teachers, students, teaching materials and the characteristic of Chinese character. We can conclude that teachers are in the overwhelmingly dominant position in the procession of teaching Chinese as foreign language. Teachers should give full play to their subjective initiative,being a link to students and teaching materials.The fourth part of the paper provides some suggestions and teaching strategies for teaching Chinese in Mauritius primary schools. Firstly, the training of the Chinese teachers must be strengthened, the quality must be improved; secondly, because different grades present different features, so we need to use different teaching methods in different stages.The last part of the paper gives a brief summary of the paper, meanwhile points out the adequacies of the paper.
