The Junior High School Geography Curriculum Standard(2011)Edition makes clear that the basic idea of the geography curriculum is to look at the cultivation of students' creative consciousness and practice ability,focus on a variety of learning methods and encourage students' autonomous learning,cooperation and exchange,actively explore.Advanced education idea has to be converted into teaching practice to complete the changes of geography class attention from traditional “score” to the concerns highlighted by new curriculum standard“capacity”,which needs the Small Class Teaching as an important carrier.Teaching in small class settings,which hosts the advanced educational ideas and combined with the curriculum reform simultaneously,has been developed in China for nearly 20 years.Especially in July 2010,the promulgation of the National Medium-and Long-Term Plan for Education Reform and Development proposes the “progressive implementation of small class teaching”,which drives a wave of the research about teaching in small class settings as well as sets off a revolution of “learning” in the classroom.This article is based on the background of the new curriculum reform of geography teaching in smaller classes settings,through the survey of students' status of geographical autonomous learning under the environment of smaller classes settings in three junior high schools in Xigang District and launched on five dimensions including learning goals,motivation,emotional,learning method and results of the research of self-regulated learning.Author analyzes the reasons behind the situation from both the teachers and students and carries out the in-depth analysis and attribution comb.On this basis,a more practicable improvement measure is suggested to be used for reference in improving the quality as well as the structure of teaching in small class settings.This article is divided into five sections,outlined as follows: The first part isthe prolegomenon,which introduces the background,object,significance,and related literature review.The second part is the research methods and research processes.This study mainly adopts the methods of literature,questionnaire investigatory,interview and other supporting methods.The third part is the survey results and causal analysis of junior high school students' status of geographical autonomous learning under the environment of smaller classes.In terms of teachers' Educational Theory and educational practice,there is a lack of emphasis on cultivating students' autonomous learning ability and strategies and methods on the cultivation of student's ability of geographical autonomous learning.Students,as the subject of study in the process of learning,has a lack of proactive planning,reasonable distribution and scientific management.The fourth part expounds the measures to improve students' status of autonomous learning of geography under the environment of smaller classes with five dimensions including learning goals,motivation,emotion,learning method and results.The fifth part is the conclusion including combings of the contents,reflections on the deficiencies,and prospects for future research.
