This paper is inspired by two main aspects. Firstly, influenced by the social reality that natural disasters take place frequently in recent years, domestically and overseas, this paper concentrates on the developing ‘disaster literature' and classifies this type of literature, whose contents and philosophy impress readers and provoke their thoughts towards nature, society, lives and humanity. On the other hand, this paper starts from many common problems in current education of Chinese, such as embellishment and kitsch in teaching of Chinese, singular style of articles in Chinese textbooks, lack of life consciousness and humanistic quality among senior school students, incomplete life education, etc.. This paper explores aesthetic significance, social value and educational meaning of disaster literature by collecting a large amount of preliminary resources. Also, it proposes to add outstanding 'disaster literature' works in Chinese textbooks. Bases of this proposal are investigation of articles in current Chinese textbooks as well as survey of needs of Chinese textbooks and Chinese teachings among senior high school students. This research is mainly established on 'disaster literature' and teaching of Chinese. It analyzes their common features and respective characteristics, and points out that 'disaster literature' would help to increase humanity of Chinese teaching and is beneficial for students to form healthy perspectives towards lives. It focuses on the fact that 'disaster literature' is missing from senior high schools' Chinese textbooks and discusses consequences of this phenomenon. In order to prove the aforementioned point of view, this paper also introduces distinguished domestic and foreign 'disaster literature' works that are suitable for reading and study. Its final goal is to make efforts in helping senior high school students get exposure to more recent and more profound literature.
