English Curriculum Criterion in Compulsory Phrase(2011 edition)proposed that “students could understand simple illustrated stories”,and“read simple stories and short passages correctly with the help of images”,which emphasized the importance of images in English teaching.English picture books have become important books suitable for children's development with their characteristics of presenting texts and graphics at the same time.Therefore,English Picture Books Teaching is gradually highlighted.English picture books teaching can make the students have fun,stimulate students' initiatives and interests in learning English,and promote the development of the students' comprehensive language using ability,by providing easy-to-understand stories with texts and graphics and rich story lines.After making a literature review on previous relevant domestic and foreign researches,and giving a definition of the concept of English picture books teaching,the thesis adopts the method of action research,choosing students of Class S in grade three in Y primary school as the research objects,and does the teaching practice action research lasting for a semester.The teaching practices are in accordance with the teaching philosophy of putting students first,creating situations,making clear goals,and the principles of student-based and teaching-materials-based and educational-value-stressed,selecting three English picture books and making designs of the Pre-task preparations,While-task procedures and Post-task activities.Through analyzing classroom teaching observation records,students' worksheets,feedbacks,teachers' interview records of students and related data,this thesis finds that English picture books teaching is feasible and valuable in English of teaching of Middle-grade Elementary School students.However,there alsoappear some problems in the process of teaching.For instance,English picture books teaching time arrangement is not enough;the design of Picture books teaching is simplified;English picture books teaching pays more attention on the texts rather than pictures and so on.Based on this,the thesis puts forward some improvement suggestions: perfecting the design of teaching goals of English picture books;Strengthening the regulation of English picture books teaching process;Improving the evaluation of English picture books teaching;Developing channels to promote English picture books teaching,with the hope of bringing reference and inspiration for subsequent English picture books teaching researches,and promoting the development of primary school English teaching.
