The decision on deepening education reform and promoting quality education published by the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China in 2011 highly emphasizes the importance of promoting students in their physical, psychological, social adaptation ability and harmonious development,in which the new curriculum standards on physical education and health in compulsory education were meanwhile created. The new curriculum standards put forward 4 major learning objectives: sports participation, sports skills, physical health, mental health and social adaptation. At present,in physical education,it seems that schools attach great attention only to the development of students' physical and mental health but overlooked the capacity of students' social adaptability. With the faster development of our society and social environment, demands for people's capacity of social adaptation become higher and higher. Therefore,we should pay attention to the cultivation of students' social adaptability in teaching. With a distinctive feature of collectivity and comprehensiveness, basketball plays a unique role in nurturing talents, has a significant effect on strengthening students' organization ability, physical fitness, psychology, social adaptation and their personality. As conventional teaching methods are still dominate in basketball teaching, hence it is of great significance to explore a teaching method in which both students' physical quality and knowledge of sports skills can be improved, and their mental health and social adaptation ability can be strengthened.Cooperative learning is a kind of teaching method which can promote the communication between students themselves and with teachers. Thanks to this method, students can and experience the fun of cooperation while completing the common learning tasks. This paper, based on the basketball class in middle school, uses cooperative learning method. It pays attention to how to enable students to better show themselves and to care for their classmates closer,to realize the importance of cooperation spirit in team and to learn the value of sharing and respect. This paper,with120 students in grade seven from four classes of Xinglong County Xiaodongqu district middle school as its subjects, uses the method of literature, questionnaire, teaching experiment, mathematical statistics and logical analysis. The teaching experiment lasted 15 weeks of a semester. This paper draws conclusion from sixdimensions from the Social Adaptation Scale made by JiaLinbin, including learning adaptability, self consciousness, social interaction, family environment, school interpersonal relationship, frustration tolerance. The conclusions are as follows:Through the rational use of cooperative learning in basketball class in physical education, students can exert their talents to strengthen their capacity of self-learning.As a result, they can discover, transform and expand knowledge by themselves. In such a learning environment, students have experienced the pleasure of cooperative learning because they have learned how to communicate and share and understand how to help each other, besides, they work hard to accomplish the common task.At the same time, students' interest in learning is greatly improved because of their fully integration to their learning cognitively, emotionally and psychologically.Through the use of cooperative learning, basketball teaching can improve students' self-awareness,and enable students to have good interpersonal relationships in school. It also trains the students' social adaptation and social adaptability in frustration tolerance, thus laying a solid foundation for them to go into society in the future.
