Textbook is the carrier to realize the curriculum requirements,educational ideas and the core part of the implementation of classroom teaching.It is not only the concrete embodiment of the curriculum goal and content,but also the main tool for teachers and students to carry out teaching activities.Therefore,it is very important to evaluate the quality of English textbooks.This is a comparative study on Go For It and Longman Activate,which takes comparative analysis and literature study as its research methods.The study makes comparison of the textbooks' deep structure including emotional attitude,cultural element,language knowledge and language skills.It also analyzes the advantages and disadvantages of the two editions of textbooks so as to provide some reference for the textbook users and compilers,at the same time provide reference for the reform and construction of junior middle school English textbooks on Mainland China.It found out that each unit in GFI begins with a topic and involves a wide range of aspects and contents which can arouse the interest of students.The arrangement of the unit is in accordance with the law of language learning,and provides a variety of learning strategies for the students to acquire the four skills in the learning process.However,there are some deficiencies in this textbook,such as larger vocabulary and less real context.Longman Activate has a more reasonable curriculum design,scientific system as well as creating the authentic situation and the content closes to students' daily life.Although textbooks focus on the introduction of local culture in Hong Kong,they have fewer introductions of Chinese traditional culture which will inevitably lead to the lack of full understanding of Chinese historical development,traditional culture and local customs on Mainland China.Textbook compilers should choose the content and vocabulary which are updated and close to real life,creating more real situations for the students and increasing the introduction of Chinese culture.The teachers should use the textbooks flexibly,that is to say they can make some necessary deletion,supplement and replacement to the textbooks according to the specific circumstances.
