English teachers' autonomous professional development directly affects the results of English teaching in higher vocational college,and it also does the same to their students' growth.Improving teachers' qualities relies on not only the implementation of government policies but also the teachers' autonomous professional development basing on their plans.As a matter of fact,owing to the burden from life and work,the current situations of English teachers' autonomous professional development is worrying.Taking four English teachers from Shanwei Polytechnic as examples,the writer hopes to show the existing situations and difficulties in their development by using qualitative research.However because of the limitations of the research paradigm,the writer does not expect to generalize the conclusions from the research,but tries to picture the true developing situations in the hope of giving rise to ponder and probe this matter more by researchers.The thesis consists of four parts.Chapter one introduces the English teachers' background including causes for the research,relevant theories,research significance,relevant concepts and the process of the research.Chapter two demonstrates,through the integration of the theories and the materials,the teachers' autonomous developing basis,aims,choices and ways etc.Chapter three discusses the affecting factors in their development,which are the teachers themselves,their family members and the college environment they work in.Chapter four is the revelation from the research.By describing and analyzing,the writer gets the following findings: the teachers' developing aims are based on the knowledge of themselves and working environment;the autonomous developing awareness is the precondition for perfecting their developing choices;to find the suitable ways of autonomous development depends mainly on the teachers themselves,and meanwhile the school authority should create more opportunities for the teachers and empower them;to coordinate the affecting factors for their development could benefit the teachers much,among which reasonably arranging the free time is the key one.The final conclusion presents that true love on the teaching career is the driving force for their autonomous professional development.
