In the era of knowledge economy, the integration of disciplines has been expanding and deepening. In this paper,by using the function of the AGIL system from the perspective of the theory of Parsons, introduces the setting up functional conditions of interdisciplinary organizations required in American research universities from the four dimensions of adaptation function, target function, integration function and pattern maintenance function. Then selecting the Stanford University as a case, analyzes the conditions for the establishment of the interdisciplinary organization. It can provide the corresponding reference for the establishment of Chinese research university interdisciplinary organization.Based on literature research and case study, this paper analyzes the functional condition of interdisciplinary organizations in American research universities, and is divided into five parts. The introduction analyze the research origin, the definitions of core concepts, literature review, research significance, research ideas and methods; As the focus of this study, the first chapter introduces the needs and obstacles of establishing interdisciplinary organizations in American research universities.the second chapter introduces building functional conditions of interdisciplinary organizations in the American research universities by using the theory of AGIL from the adaptation function, target acquisition function and integration function and maintenance. The third chapter selects Stanford University as a typical case study, which respectively correspond to four aspects,in-depth analysis of the conditions of the establishment of interdisciplinary organizations in Stanford University. The last part is the conclusion, which summarizes the results of this study and the implications for the establishment of interdisciplinary organizations in Chinese universities.Through the research, this paper finds that the successful establishment of interdisciplinary organizations in American research universities is the result of the internal and external interaction and the development of the discipline. The change of the discipline development environment of the research university leads to the development of the subject of knowledge production mode, which is based on the mode of knowledge production. This is the primary reason for the establishment of interdisciplinary organizations;Secondly, interdisciplinary organizations of American research universities have been granted by the US National Science Foundation and social donation. In private research universities, social donation is the main source, which provides adequate funding support for interdisciplinary organization.Again,American research universities itself actively reform the original traditional faculties or innovation to establish interdisciplinary organizations, the reform of teacher appointment system, the establishment of interdisciplinary research office to support interdisciplinary organizations. Finally, the internal teachers and students cooperation consciousness in research universities is the guarantee to maintain the interdisciplinary organization model, the regular academic exchanges and discussions, and' informal exchange of ideas promote the formation of interdisciplinary organization culture and enhance a sense of organization belonging of the interdisciplinary research faculty and staff. We should learn the conditions and experiences of interdisciplinary organization of American research universities to enhance the innovation ability of interdisciplinary research.
