Ancient novels, poetry and prose have created the glorious Chinese ancient literature. As a literary genre, Chinese ancient novels in the long development course,formed its own unique artistic features. Studying of ancient novels can not only make students realize the ancient novels narrative achievements, but also deepen students'understanding of the traditional classical culture, raise students' humanities accomplishment and aesthetic taste. The articles of the textbooks are important way to carry out teaching activities. Therefore, making research on ancient novels in the textbooks has very important significance for teaching. Based on the Chinese textbooks for junior school students which are published by People's Education Press in 2001 and the Chinese textbooks for senior high school students which are published by People's Education Press in 2004, this paper analyses the choreography of ancient stories and the present teaching problems. And it also put forward some suggestions on the textbook arrangement and teaching.In this paper, the first part sketches out the ancient novels according with some related study materials. It includes of the ancient concept of "novel",the evolution of ancient novel literary and the overall characteristics of the ancient Chinese novels, etc.The second part does some statistical analysis from the quantity,the distribution, the genre and the peculiarity of ancient novels. The third part points out the shortcomings in the teaching of ancient Chinese novels and analyses the reason for these deficiencies. The reasons summarize as three points. Firstly, on account of the entrance exam pressure,teachers always determine the teaching content according to the test questions. Secondly,the selections of ancient novels in textbook don't have an unambiguous and systematic knowledge hierarchy. Thirdly, some teachers are lack of ancient novel knowledge. Then,in the fourth part, this paper propounds some suggestions on the compiling of teaching materials and teaching strategies of ancient novels. The former mainly offers advices on these three aspects: expanding the selected scope of the article, arranging the articles on the basis of the studying phase of students, adding different styles of texts. The latter offers proposals from the combination of the original work, the text interpretation and analysis of the text artistic characteristics in ancient novel teaching.
