English Curriculum Standard(2011)requires that junior middle school students should have accumulated more than 150 thousand words by extracurricular reading,which fully illustrates the importance of reading in English learning in junior middle school.At present,schools have not given enough attention to extracurricular English reading.In extracurricular English reading,students can read the material independently,which helps to improve the ability of acquiring second language.This study investigates the current situation of junior high school students? Extracurricular English reading,and emphasizes the importance and necessity of junior middle school students? extracurricular reading again,and hopes that students can have the proper guidance with the help of teachers.This paper is a study of English extracurricular reading of junior middle school students.It attempts to answer the following questions: 1)What are the attitudes of the students towards extracurricular English reading? 2)What are the main ways for junior middle school students? extracurricular English reading? 3)What are the factors that affect students? extracurricular reading? To this end,the research participants of this paper are students and teachers,which are from No.10 junior middle school in Yantai,including 320 students and 5 English teachers.This study used questionnaires and interviews with the method of combining conduct survey and research.A total of 320 questionnaires were issued,313 were recovered,the recovery rate was 97.8%,and there were 301 valid questionnaires.Five English teachers were interviewed and recorded with a mobile phone.The data of the questionnaire was input into Excel 2010 for analysis,and the recording of the interview was converted into text,which was combined with the transcripts made during the interview.And to explore their attitudes towards the extracurricular English learning,the way and the factors that affect learning,from the two aspects of subjective and objective,this paper finds out the problems existing in junior middle school students? extracurricular English reading,analyzes the influential factors,and explores the effective ways of developing English extracurricular learning.Based on data analysis,the main findings are as follows: 1)Junior middle school students can realize the importance of extracurricular reading,and most of them think extracurricular reading is related to their English learning,but in the process of actual reading,there is still a lack of motivation for students? extracurricular reading.2)Most of junior middle school students don?t often use reading methods.In the process of reading,nearly 40% of students don?t use auxiliary tools.3)There are mainly two factors that affect students? extracurricular reading,one is heavy homework,and the other is insufficient vocabulary.According to this case,the author proposes that students should be encouraged to do extracurricular activities from two aspects: students and teachers.Teachers should encourage and guide students and provide a good reading environment for students,and students should work hard on reading plans and reading strategies.
