Chengdu Dialect Continuous Reading And Research

The city of Chengdu is located in the northeast of Sichuan province. Chengdu dialect belongs to the Chengyu Section of Southwest Mandarin. This article adopts experimental method to study the single, double and triple tone pitch and duration of different ages and different genders of Chengdu dialect. And summarize the laws of double tone and triple tone sandhi.Although the single tones of Chengdu dialect shows a slight difference in tone value because of different ages and genders, the same-type tones should belong to the same tone category. Combine acoustic experiment and auditory perception, we believe this is the common difference among the same tone variants. After the normalization ,there are four tones of separate word in Chengdu dialect: Yinping 35,Yangping 41,Shangsheng 51 and Qusheng 213.On the relative duration of mono-syllable tone: Yinping 1.15> Yangping 1.11 >Qusheng 1.10 > Shangsheng 0.64. Yinping is the longest, Shangsheng is the shortest,the gap between Yangping and Qusheng is small and they are in the middle.Double tone sandhi rule of Chengdu dialect: In the Yinping+Yinping combination, influenced by the former tone, the latter tone changes from the middle-rising tone into high-level tone. In the Yangping plus combination, the Yangpin tone changes into middle-level tone. In the Shangsheng plus combination,the Shangsheng tone changes into high-rising tone. The arch will be disappeared if Qusheng is the latter word and it will changes into down tone or level tone.On the relative duration of the bi-syllable tone, the former word : Yangpin 0.32 >Shangsheng 0.30 > Qusheng 0.29 > Yinping 0,28; the latter word: Qusheng 0.38 >Yinping = Shangsheng 0.33 > Yangping 0.32.Triple tone sandhi rule of Chengdu dialect: The tone of the former words are mostly level tone and rising tone. The tone of the middle words are mostly level tone,especially high level tone. The latter words are mostly down tone and middle level tone. No matter the former word, the middle word or the latter word, their voice register all focus on the middle part. The law is more neat than that of the double tone sandhi.The triple tone sandhi style of Chengdu dialect are mostly level-level-down which including 29 union types. Except for that, there are some other styles which have not so many union types like rising-level-down(9 types), rising-down-down(7 types), level-down-down(5 types), level-level-level(5 types). rising-level-level(4 types), level-down-level(3 types), rising-down-level(2 types).On the relative duration of the tri-syllable tone, the former word ; Qusheng 0.21 > Yangping 0.21 > Shangsheng 0.19 > Yinping 0,16; the middle word: Yangping 0.21 > Qusheng 0.20 > Yinping 0.19 > Shangsheng 0.18; the latter word: Yinping 0.27 > Qusheng 0.24 > Yangping=Shangsheng 0.23.
