Classroom assessment is an ongoing process of gathering useful information to be used as feedback to monitor and modify teaching and learning. Many studies indicate that developmental classroom student assessment can lead to significant achievement gains, especially for low-achievers. With psychological and affective factors taken into account, developmental classroom student assessment is also proved to exert positive influence on students' affect.There are many factors causing a middle school student's lower self-efficacy, and the key one in the traditional summative assessment. Combing years of experiences in middle school English education, based on self-efficacy theory as well as developmental classroom student assessment, the author points out it is necessary to take advantages of developmental classroom student assessment to promote middle students'self-efficacy.In order to find out the influence of developmental classroom student assessment on students'self-efficacy in middle school English class, two classes were chosen as corresponding classes. The result of the experiment shows that:(1) developmental classroom student assessment has a positive influence on students' self-efficacy. (2) Low achievers benefited more from developmental classroom student assessment in English learning self-efficacy than high achievers did. (3) Developmental classroom assessment influenced students'English learing self-efficacy through the components below:Teachers'instructional practice and feedback, self-assessment and self reflection, peer assessment and comparison, portfolio assessment and goal setting. Therefore, it's vital for teacher to be cognizant students self-efficacy level and integrate developmental classroom student assessment components beneficial for their improvement of self-efficacy into middle school English classes so that students can make greater progress in English learning self-eddicacy.Finally, the potential problems for implementation of developmental classroom student assessment, the limitations and suggestions were put forward for future research.
