Study on land use changes is of great significance to reveal the degree of human activity. At present, the research methods and models of land use changes mainly focus on the speed and extent of land use changes within the region and do not fully consider the impact of population factors on land use changes. In this paper, the population factors are included in the evaluation indicators of land use changes and the quantitative change of land use-per capita in the arid area is proposed.Based on the land use changes matrix and land use changes tendency, the temporal and spatial characteristics of land use changes in Xinjiang are discussed. The results show that:(1)From 1990 to 2015,the land use changes in Xinjiang was significant, and land use changes was mainly between grassland-cultivated land-unused land.Among them, the cultivated land increased by 2.05×104 km2,the grassland decreased by 1.58×104km2 and the unused land decreased by 1.11 ×104 km2.(2)The change of land use in Xinjiang is represented by the change of land use per capita. And the change of per capita land use in Xinjiang is significantly higher than that of the whole country, which is 12.6 times of the national level; The changes in different land classes is described by Land Use Changes tendency;Grassland is easily transformed into arable land;Woodland, urban and rural residential land are relatively stable;Unused land turned into other types of land use has certain resistance.(3)The per capita land use transfer index proposed in this paper can reflect the main characteristics of land use change in Xinjiang, and it is helpful to reveal the dynamic process of land change in arid area, which can provide a new perspective for evaluating land use in arid area.(4)Grassland-cultivated land,woodland-cultivated land, unused land-cultivated land are mainly distributed in the geographical unit with superior natural conditions, and has the characteristics of linear distribution along the river.Farmland-urban and rural industrial and mining residential land, unused land-urban and rural residential land have the distribution characteristics of the point.(5)The economic progress, population growth and urbanization are the main factors driving the land use change in Xinjiang from 1990 to 2015.The influence of economic progress, urbanization process and population growth on land use change is mainly for the land use and its structure and degree of change.
