An Application Of Functional Equivalence Theory In The Diplomacy Interpreting

The theory of functional equivalence of Nida advocates that we should reach the level of functional equivalence between two languages,avoiding inflexible translation word by word.That is to say translation not only means the equivalence of the meaning of the words,but also the equivalence of the semantics meaning,style and literary forms.The information conveyed by translation includes superficial word message and deeper cultural message.The theory of functional equivalence is exerting a growing influence on the whole translation world.From a macro point of view,it breaks the bound of traditional minds and offer a new angle for the study of translation.It injected the new thought,concept and method to the translation.The theory of functional equivalence brought modern linguistics,communication art,informatics,semiotics and aesthetics to the translation field.There are more detailed study on translation from many new angles,it provided many new ways to the study of translation.The analysis on the theory of functional equivalence established a solid basis for the modern translation studies.From a micro perspective,the theory of functional equivalence settled the problem of literal translation and free translation for a long term.It offers many constructive advices to the translators aiming at reappear perfectly the meaning of source language in the different language structure of target language.This thesis,based on the theory of functional equivalence,analyzes the common problems in diplomacy interpreting in order to find solutions to solve these translation problems.This thesis consists of three parts: Introduction,subject and conclusion.Introduction mainly elaborates the research basics,research scope,research meaning,research method and innovation.The main body is divided into three chapters.Chapter one mainly elaborates the essence and principle of the theory of the functional equivalence theory.Chapter two mainly elaborates and defines the basic concept of diplomacyinterpreting,sorts out the existed problems of diplomacy interpreting.Diplomacy interpreting refers to the interpreting which focus on the diplomacy dealing with the scope of foreign affairs.The character of the diplomacy interpreter is strong policy sensibility.It needs to be interpreted concisely,avoiding mistakes.A qualified diplomacy interpreter must be familiar with our nation's policy and understand the backgrounds of various international issues and bilateral relations.Not only familiar with our nation's culture,but also other nation's culture.Chapter three analyses the application of the functional equivalence theory in the diplomacy interpreting.With the guidance of the theory of functional equivalence,this chapter analyzes problems of diplomacy interpreting and tries to find appropriate translation methods.Conclusion:This thesis indicates that indicates that Nida's functional equivalence theory can help interpreters translate accurately related diplomatic contents so as to reach the level of functional equivalence.If we encounter with some difficult backgrounds which including abundant cultural factors,we can simplify the words and use notions to interpret them.
