| Based on Christina Nord’s "function + loyalty" principle and the "perception--thought operation.—expression—review" translation mode proposed in Yang Shizhuo’s Translational Writing Theory, the paper is an attempt to streamline the Chinese-English translation practice of the "Report on Prospecting of Namibia XXX Cement Limestone Deposit" which was done with computer aid,and to figure out solutions for problems and difficulties arising from C-E translation of geological exploration reports,as well as qualities a translator should have nowadays. The research findings are as follows:(1)As a science or technical writing in either Chinese or English,a geological report entails clarity,conciseness,accuracy,well-organizedness,and ethical and legal considerations.A translator should keep these characteristics in mind and be loyal to clients and audience in the translation process.(2)As a Chinese original text of geological exploration features long sentences that convey multiple specialized information,a translator should have a thorough perception of the original text,be considerate in thought operation by splitting a sentence or integrating sentences and reflecting the original style, and try to express concisely and accurately to echo the characteristics of technical writing, and review the translation at any time.(3)It is likely to encounter many common but specialized expressions in Chinese original texts of geological reports.A translator should be modest especially when he/she is not familiar with specific knowledge or has less translation experience.Prudent verification by searching information or consulting professionals or clients is an effective way to confirm relevant knowledge and its specific meaning and translation.(4)It is possible to find confusing expressions and lack of logic in the original texts.A translator should have a good language sense to tell such flaws and,if any,get the meaning right by understanding, judging, consulting or otherwise to clarify the original thinking before rendering, thus preparing for an accurate and logic translation. To sum up,the research is theoretically significant in supporting the C-E translational writing study and practically valuable in C-E translation of geological texts. |
