A Study On Translation Of Passive Voice Sentence In English Business Contract

Compared to Chinese business contract,passive voice sentences are more frequently used in English business contracts.Therefore,it is impossible to achieve a full equivalence between the two languages when translating passive voice sentences.Therefore,this paper studies the translation of passive voice sentences in housing sales contracts:Purchase Contract and Transfer Authorization,which the author is responsible for during internship,analyzing the passive voice sentences' translation.First of all,this study analyzed the pragmatic meaning of frequently using passive sentences;Secondly,based on Nida's "functional equivalence" theory,the report clarified the primary goals which need to be followed when translating passive sentences;Thirdly,it gave a conclusion about feasible methods of translating English contracts which is as followed:According to specifc situations,there are sometimes no subjects while sometimes emphasizing subjects.We can translate passive sentences into Chinese active sentences,including the structure that original subject still act as subject,generalized-subject,judgement sentence and no-subject sentences.When emphasizing particular messages,it is translated into passive sentences,including the structure of"being,suffering" which transfers unpleasant results,the structure of "own,by" which states the facts while the structure of "get,give" shows positive meaning.Through a large amount of contract translation practices,the author concluded many feasible skills and translation strategies.It is hoped to provide some constructive help to contract translation learners and international Business workers in the future.
