Notes are crucial memory aid in consecutive interpreting. The effectiveness of notes decides the completeness, accuracy and fluency of an interpreter’s delivery. In conference interpreting and business negotiation where dense terminology and professional knowledge involved, interpreters usually bear a high cognitive pressure. In this case, inefficient notes will interfere with interpreters’ attention rather than assist their memory, and thus impair the interpreting quality. This report took a mock business negotiation between Beryl Company and the Dole Food Company as an example, analyzed the problems and its causes in the author’s own notes on the basis of Gile’s Effort Model, and figured out possible ways to tackle these problems.Part Ⅰ describes the background and process about the task, including pre-task preparation, interpreting implementation and post-task evaluation. In part Ⅱ,the author sorted out the previous studies at home and abroad on consecutive interpretating and notetaking based on Gile’s Effort Model. In part Ⅲ,three major problems were examined in the author’s notes, namely insufficient key information in notes, indecipherable notes and unstructured notes.Feasible coping tactics were elaborated in part Ⅳ,such as enhancing listening comprehension and short-term memory, reducing time requirements of note-taking and improving note structure.Through analyzing the causes of problems in notes and putting forward corresponding coping tactics, this report hopes to provide some enlightenment for interpreters in dealing with note-taking difficulties and in improving their note-taking ability.
