The Three Principles on Translation by British translation theorist Tytler are one of the most influential theories in the field of translation research. To examine its applicability to essay translation, this study translated the essay Duxiu Peak from Chinese into English following the Three Principles by Tytler.Duxiu Peak is one essay selected from the book Life and Self Meditation by Zhao Ping,a professor of Guizhou University of Finance and Economics. In the essay, the author describes his experience, emotion and thought during his visit of the Duxiu Peak in the night. The writing reflects the unfair treatment suffered by some intellectuals. The translation practice reveals that: 1)to a certain degree the translation can arrive at a transcript of the ideas of the original work by explaining the connotative meanings of culture-loaded terms;2)to a certain degree the style and manner of writing can be maintained by employing appropriate words, rhetoric device and sentences;and 3)the translation can have nearly the same ease of original composition by connecting the short sentences and clauses. In a word, the Three Principles are applicable to essay translation.
