Application Of Three Principles Of Translation In English-Chinese Translation Practice

Three Principles of Translation, first brought forth and expounded by the noted translator A.F. Tytler for the purpose of helping realize ideal translation, attracted wide attention of translation experts and scholars. They have also triggered intensive discussions and have long been a research subject in the studies of translation.This thesis first gives a tentative account of the theoretical implications of the three principles, and then elaborates on the application of the three principles in guiding of the actual translation practice-the translation of Conscious Choices:A Model for Self-Directed Learning. Furthermore, this thesis, on the basis of the characteristics of the books on learning methods and techniques, further discusses the issues with respect to translating the book and related methods and techniques in the actual translation practice. So far, the three principals have been widely applied in translation practice, but the application has scarcely gone far beyond literary works, and little has been employed in translating books on education, especially in books on learning strategies. In recent years, books on learning strategies have aroused the interest of Chinese readers, and many books of this kind have been introduced from abroad. Therefore, the study of translation of the books on learning strategies is necessary and of great significance.In the light of the above discussions, this thesis arrives at a conclusion that in translation practice, a translator should be loyal to the original works and convey precisely the ideas of the author. In terms of content, a translator should make an effort to familiarize himself with the related background knowledge and make an ample preparation before translation, thus to realize the accurate interpretation of the original text; as to style, a translator should adopt flexible translation methods and techniques in order to attain vividness and liveliness to gratify the taste of the target readers; in respect of language, a translator should give priority to plainness so as to achieve brevity, naturalness and fluency.
