A Report On Guide Escort Interpreting In The University Of Notre Dame

Guide escort interpreting is a very specific interpreting practice.With globalization and the rapid development of the tourism industry,there are a growing number of people traveling across borders.Guide escort interpretation plays an important role in those cross-cultural activities.As a cultural envoy,interpreters should have an extensive knowledge of diverse cultures to advance understanding and communications among the clients.This report is written based on the interpreter's guide escort interpreting task in Notre Dame starting from October 2015 to July 2016.Taking Skopostherie as the theoretical guidance,the interpreter describes the interpreting process,analyses encountered problems and corresponding coping solutions.This report mainly includes the description of the interpreting task,interpreter's preparation works,the encountered obstacles and corresponding strategies as well as task summary.Firstly,the report gives a description of background information and requirements concerning the task.Secondly,it depicts the practical and theoretical preparations made by the author,including collecting information about the university,building-up of glossary,taking training and field trips.Thirdly,the report analyses problems encountered in the task and the corresponding solutions adopted by the author.There are five problems,namely a lack of professional background,accent barriers,redundancy of language,information loss and culture-loaded words.Corresponding solutions adopted include the accumulation of terminologies and professional knowledge,getting familiar with accents,omission,amplification and paraphrasing.Lastly,the report summarizes the gains and deficiencies by self-assessment and gives suggestion for future work.The analysis of this report indicates that interpreters should have essential linguistic skills and proper pre-task preparations.At the same time,Skopostheorie is of great value in guiding interpreters to choose interpreting strategies when encountered with escort interpreting problems and complete a successful task.
