| This translation report focuses on the E-C translation process of 5.1 to 5.4 in the fourth volume of The Oxford History of Literary Translation in English,which documents the translation of Greek and Latin literature in Britain from 1790 to 1900,including Homer,Greek drama and Latin poetry.In this report the author adopts Peter Newmark's semantic and communicative translation theory as the guiding theory to address the translation problems.This report includes five chapters.The first chapter is introduction,giving a brief introduction to the translation project and its significance;the second chapter is preparation,analyzing the lexical,syntactic and textual features of the original text and documents parallel texts and other relevant texts,translation tools and teamwork;the third chapter talks about Peter Newmark's semantic and communicative translation theory;the fourth chapter is case analysis,analyzing specific cases at lexical,syntactic and textual levels,the lexical level containing translation of culture-loaded words and nominalization structure as well as the use of four-character idioms in Chinese,the syntactic level including translation of long and complicated sentences and passive sentences,while the textual level talking about reference,substitution,ellipsis and adding missing links;the fifth chapter is conclusion,summarizing the experience,limitations and reflections on the translation.By appropriately adopting the semantic and communicative translation theory in the translation practice,the author has used various translation methods and skills to strive to convey the original information accurately and fluently so that the readers can get a whole and accurate understanding of the translation of Greek and Latin literature in Britain in 18 th and 19 th Century.The author hopes that the translation could help related scholars,students and literary translation amateurs in their research and study. |
