This is a report on the English-Chinese translation project in which Employment Law in Canada,a legal treatise published on the WeirFoulds LLP official website, was selected as the source text.It is an informative text, which mainly introduces the obligations of both Canadian employers and employees stipulated in employment law. This report reviews the process of the translation practice, points out the translation theory of dynamic equivalence and translation strategies of domestication and foreignization applied in the translation practice, and discusses two typical problems encountered in the translation process: long sentence translation and passive sentence translation, followed by a detailed presentation of their solutions. In view of long sentence translation, this report proposes that the translation strategy of changing “a sentence rattan” into “bamboo sections” be adopted, and the translation skills of linear translation, inversion, division and synthesis be used.In view of passive sentence translation, the translation skills of translating the passive sentence into passive sentence and into active sentence are proposed according to the emphasized sections, the focus being discussed or the requirement of the target language. The translation report demonstrates how the author has tackled the typical problems encountered in the translation process by applying the translation theory and skills, and it can also provide reference for other translators who are engaged in English-Chinese translation of legal treatises.
