| The Gui Clique was a significant but controversial clique of Republic of China in China's modern history.This translation report studies the Chinese-English translation from Chapter 27 to Chapter 29 of Wars of the Gui Clique,a book,written by Qin Weiguo and Liu Wenjun,documents the war history and development of the Gui Clique.The book,which belongs to the military text,mainly describes the wars that the Gui Clique had been through,with some description of the local policies,economies and author's attitudes towards these events.The Chapter 27 to Chapter 29 that I translated mainly tells the period about the year from 1938 to 1939,when the New Gui Clique took part in Counter Japanese War and had been through three battles: battle of Wuhan,battle of Sui county-zaoyang and battle of south Guangxi.This report is based on the theory of text typology summarized in Peter Newmark's A Textbook of Translation(1988).With the guidance of the theory and taking account of the source text's(herein after referred as ST)contents and language features as well as the translation practice,the author categorizes Wars of the Gui Clique as an “informative-expressive text”.The basic feature of this type of text is that it mainly conveys objective information while inserting now and then the writer's comments and attitudes.Because of this mixture,the translating strategy of this type of text may be different in different contexts.When translating the wars and historical events,the translator takes the target readers as the main consideration,and may adopt strategies like literal translation,complementary translation,omission and rearrangement of the word order to convey objective information faithfully.When translating writer's comments and attitudes,the translator should be in the writer's shoes and focus on the ST's context and language features.By choosing appropriate sentences,we may get close to the writer's intention.It is hoped that this report may give some help in translating text about war and history. |
