This report is based on the author's consecutive interpreting experience for a governmental meeting between four members of CPPCC Dongguan Committee and Professor Ian Reid,a senior scholar specializing in Computer Vision and Artificial Intelligence technology from University of Adelaide. The report comprises four chapters. In the first chapter, the author gives a general view of the interpreting task, including the theme of the meeting, profiles of participants, etc. In the next chapter, the author describes the process of this task, which is divided into three stages: pre-task preparation, interpreting process, and post-task description. In the first stage, preparation work like background research, glossary building, and emergency plans are presented. This is followed by a detailed description of the twohour meeting in the interpreting process stage. And then in the final stage, the author shows the feedback from the clients and self-reflections on the difficulties and problems in this task. The third chapter is the major component of this report. In this chapter, the author conducts a case study under the guidance of Interpretive Theory of Translation.Interpretive Theory of Translation holds that successful writing and interpreting is based on an understanding of the message in the source language and the restatement of that message in the target language, focusing on the sense instead of the words of the original language. The author chooses one of the most obvious problem——word-forword interpreting, and analyzes several cases from the transcription.By analyzing the reasons of the problems and possible approaches to handle them, the author finds that paraphrase, amplification, omission and reorganization are useful tools to achieve deverbalization. In the last chapter,a conclusion is drawn on the four tactics to enhance interpreting performance.Besides, other suggestions for future interpreting are also presented, such as making thorough preparation, taking notes in a concise and logical manner, consulting the speaker when necessary.Hopefully, this report will make theoretical contribution to the Interpretive Theory of Translation and its application, especially for the study of deverbalization, and practical contribution by suggesting useful approaches to achieve deverbalization and improve interpreting performance for student interpreters.
