This report is about the translation of the introduction, chapter one, chapter two and chapter three of The Teacher Wars: A History of America's Most Embattled Profession(Excerpts)written by Dana Goldstein who was a reporter for New York Times and an excellent journalist. So far, there has been no Chinese version of the book in China.By uncovering the surprising roots of hot button issues from the groundbreaking history of 175 years of American education, which finds answers in the past to the controversies that plague our public schools today, the book upends the conversation about American education by bringing the lessons of history to bear on the dilemmas we confront today.By creatively combining typical translation examples with Eugene A.Nida's Functional Equivalence Theory, the report illustrates how the translator adopts functional equivalence on the basis of the correspondence in the lexical and syntactic level between the source language and target language. That is to say,the adequacy of translation is judged in nouns, adjectives, verbs, phrases and sentences,as well as long and difficult sentence structure.Under the guidance of the Functional Equivalence Theory, the translation report explores translation skills and methods used in the translation practice. The paper consists of five chapters: Chapter One introduces the source text and its author,as well as the significance of the translation, translation requirements and translation difficulties;Chapter Two specifically illustrates translation procedures;Chapter Three lays the theoretical foundation, which covers the introduction to Eugene A.Nida and his representative theory—Functional Equivalence Theory;Chapter Four analyzes some typical cases from the perspective of Functional Equivalence Theory;Chapter Five summarizes the translation experience and puts forward some suggestions for improvements.
