English-Chinese consecutive interpreting is a very common type of interpreting. The interpreter first takes notes during the process of the speaker's speech, and then interprets.During a real-life consecutive event, the organizers usually do not want the consecutive interpreting to take up too much time, because there's usually time pressure for interpreting events. Therefore, the format of consecutive interpreting requires interpreters to use a shorter period of time to translate than the original speech. This means that if the interpreting is redundant,it will be very difficult to interpret all the information within a limited time. This article is a case study based on the consecutive interpreting of a mock conference of Peter Thiel's interview by the Economic Club of New York. The author categorizes the redundant cases and discusses the causes and coping strategies. This thesis can help other interpreting learners to deal with redundancy and give them some inspiration. This thesis first uses the definition of redundancy in informatics. Then, after studying other scholars' classification of redundancy, the author categorizes redundancy into voice, meaning and grammar. This is further classified into acceptable redundancy and unacceptable redundancy. Then, the author studies the causes for these unacceptable redundancy cases, and groups them into preparation,listening,note-taking and language habits. At last, the author provides practical strategies to cope with redundancy.
