The Guidance Of The Translation Memory And Termbase Of SDL Trados On The Improvement Of Novice Translators’ Translation Productivity

In recent years,many students majoring in translation try to consolidate and enhance their translation skills through practice.However,they are still novice translators due to their limited translation experience.During the initial stage of translation projects,it is often difficult for novice translators to have an overall picture of the background information in a short period of time,as an effort to choose the proper translation strategies.As a result,it is much possible for novice translators to have lower translation efficiency and quality during this period.In Dior translation projects,which are long-running and have numerous batches of tasks,it is more likely for novice translators to encounter these difficulties.When undertaking such projexts,translators are required to use SDL Trados as a translation tool.Based on the author’s experience in Dior translation projects,the thesis first analyzes the translation standard and the difficulties of Dior translation projects,including various terms and translation strategies,and then discusses the applicability of SDL Trados’ translation memory and termbase building on the analysis of the efficiency and quality advantages of these two tools.Finally,specific case studies are analyzed in terms of terminology,parallel texts and direct references,with an aim to explore the two tools’ possibility to promote novice translators’ translation efficiency and quality.Through case analysis,this paper draws the conclusion that parallel texts,direct references and terminology provided by SDL Trados’ translation memory and termbase can help novice translators quickly familiarize with the background information of the original text and meet clients’ expected translation quality.However,novice translators should also internalize these key strategies to improve their own translation skills for qualified translation within shorter span of time.
